About The Artist:

Wind Harp by Ross Barrable

Canadian born Ross Barrable has been a luthier and musician since 1979 building and playing Folk Harps.

His transition from musician to sculptor came serendipitously! While playing the harp at an outside musical event, the wind came forth and began to play harmonious melodies on the strings of the harp. This experience inspired Ross to begin the journey of discovery with Aeolian Harps , resulting in the creation of enchanting musical sculptures which are sensitive enough to give voice to the vibrational spectrum of the wind.

Ross' unique acoustic art form integrates his background as a luthier with his dedicated interest in sacred geometry and the transformational power of sound.
The result is a series of visionary contemporary sculptures that delight the visual and auditory senses with ethereal harmonic tones in concert with the wind.

Artist's Statement:

Wind Harp by Ross Barrable

Through the joy of building and playing 100’s of folk harps and wind harps for the past 28 years, I have come to experience the power of harmonic sound to support, nurture and uplift me in a life affirming direction. It is through this direct experience of the mystical power of sound and its perceived influence that I am motivated and inspired to re-create and evolve the design of the Aeolian/ Wind-Earth Harp.

The first time I heard this instrument it was like listening to every chord of the universe being played at one time, I had never heard the sound before and yet it was strangely familiar.

The wind-earth harp does not play individual notes as heard on the folk harp or flute, but rather is a blending harmony of myriad sounds.  It emits the harmonic overtones of several notes, blending and interweaving into an overall symphony of sound that softens, intensifies and ceases with the movement and impulses of a consistent gentle breeze.

The sound energy moving through the harps is very dynamic and non-linear, it is three-dimensional sound, always moving, changing, and flowing in and out. The harp receives the kinetic energy of the wind and transforms it into an audible vibration that is fully an “in the moment” experience. The energy of sound does not travel in straight lines, it spirals, always; it spins, changing form and changing states. The higher the state of the energy, the freer it is to move in multiple directions or planes of existence.

My goal as a acoustic sculptor is to create an auditory experience that embraces and supports the free flow and dynamic nature of harmonic sound — because Sound is the Universal Language. Sound is a language of feelings, a language beyond words that does not align itself with the separation of religions, ethnic groups or political belief. It is unconditional in its response to those who can open their hearts to its timeless beauty.

This all comes together in the design of the Harmonic Sound Garden™; the ultimate harmonic soundscape where the presence of Spirit through the forces of nature orchestrate a symphony of primordial sounds that is  always new and can  bring the attention of the listener  into the presence of the moment.

The fundamental design components that I use are the principles of sacred geometry, the laws of harmonics and resonance and an incontrovertible commitment to the creative and spiritually transformative power of sound and its ability to reveal truth through the understanding and attunement to the laws of vibration
